Hi all, picked up a new chain a few months ago. It's already rusting! Why? Is this normal. I didn't get the gold, would that have helped? It's an EK.

Every chain I bought came wrapped in a plastic bag and was coated with a very sticky grease. Really hard to get rust sealed in grease. How was yours packed?

Hi Mark, it was packed in plastic with a ton of grease on it. I cleaned some of the grease off(didn't want the grease to fly all over my bike) then lubed with proper chain lube.

So the rust happened after install?

It only takes 1 day of riding in wet weather for chain to show surface rust. Just wipe it down and lube it again.....

It was pristine when I bought it. Weather had been wet here were I live. Just surprised at how fast it did rust. I guess gold would prevent this?

Just the humidity in the air will cause rust. Hope this helps?

The gold plating helps. Not all the parts are plated though.  They still rust if not protected.  Especially here on the wet coast.

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely, in an attractive & well preserved body...but rather to slide in sideways, body completely worn out and and with your last dying breath screaming, "HOOOYA LIFE, lets try that again"!!!

The gold would have helped, as would any plating on the links as opposed to the natural.

Everything goes a little better with the proper lube... Lube frequently, lube it like its gonna hurt... Then clean it to impress. Nothing like a clean looking chain...
