Mr Pimms

first thing i must say is thank you, to all. i have been hanging around ,searching for answers and reading , this place is full of wackos and nuts, my kind of place.so here is my story my name is Gilbert  i picked up the name Mr pimms while living in Reno and  i have a 86 1200cal , 18k,was sitting for a couple years ,she has  super faded paint and generally looks... well i think she looks great.the brother of the  guy( you know the story brother owes brother bla, blabla) i got her from said that the carbs were just rebuilt but she needed a petcock so temp tank hooked up and she started and ran good only for a moment ,i wanted to change the oil etc so i got her for $650.00 well got p/cock from randy and she dumped fuel like a hose so, pulled carbs cleaned all jets and passage ways installed o-ring kit, new plugs and caps, used de-oxit on all connectors, cleaned out fuel tank, synked carbs with morgan carbtune, installed new battery full charge, she starts up right away and runs fine idles good no backfire or anything until you let out the clutch (underload, asking for horse power)and she tries to stall. pilots are 40. and set at 2.5 turns out ,i did find a some rust on the center bolt that holds the pickup coil and cleaned it up with no change at all,I have pulled the carbs so many time now that i can do it in a flash so now i think it is electrical so am looking for  poor ground or frayed wiring.OK I've gone on enough. thanks ,Gilbert

what rpm is your idle set at?  should be above 1000 rpm , not over 1200 rpm.
is your clutch draging? meaning ,can you put it in gear without stalling , and it only tries to stall as you pull away from a stop?
are you using ngk spark plugs and did you check the gap?
will the spark jump over 1/4" when testing from wire to ground?
if your gas tank has rust your carbs will plug up in seconds
the 86 does not like a fuel filter in it and the line routing is very important to run correctly.
what is the true voltage to the coils?
is this just a flat spot on take off or no power backfire and won't go at all?
did you get all the mice out of your airbox?
is the vacuum line hooked up to the ignition box from the #2 manifold port?

that should keep you busy for a while.
good luck.

G'day and welcome Gilbert. My first thought is the clutch switch. Place the bike up on the centre stand and try letting the clutch out with no load. If it still stalls check your clutch switch.   Regards, Pete.

Welcome Gilbert, just what we need another Red and White, another ambulance driver.... We will soon have majority vote and can rule the FJowner's site.... That is once voting actually counts for something.... If your tank and carbs are clean then it should not be hard to solve your problem. I had a fuel delivery problem that kicked my ass for a while. Then I tested the fuel petcock and discovered it had a vacuum leak. You already changed yours for a new one so its not likely the issue. See if you can make the WCR in Petaluma this year. See how many Red and White FJs show up.

ohh yeah , and while you have it on  the center stand can you put it in first gear with the side stand down . may be a side stand switch problem.
