Here are two updates from Janie Winn on Steve's progress
____________________________________________________________________

No major changes over this past weekend.  Steve is very bored with the situation and ready for a change.  We're moving to my cousin's house tomorrow morning so hopefully the change to a home environment will be a welcomed relief.  I know it will easier on me in a lot of ways and also a bit harder.  I will begin giving his injections of blood thinner once we leave so need to get my "nursing skills" ready for this new challenge. Today all equipment needed is being delivered to the house and this afternoon I will pack all his things from the rehab room.  We're both looking forward to tomorrow........

Update from 8/19/09:

When I got to the hospital today (Wednesday 8/19/09) Steve was dressed, had eaten breakfast and was ready to "gear up" for his therapy sessions.  He put on his own shoe and I put on his "turtle shell" and he was ready for his ride to arrive.  While we waited for transport, I presented him with about 30 Get Well Cards and a knife to rip them open.  He needs to work on his newly found ambidextrous situation so this was a good learning opportunity for him.  He got through about 10 and the nurse came for him.  He seemed in good spirits when they whisked him away so let's see how he feels after they work him out for about two hours!

Yesterday he requested to be out of bed a couple of times so I got a chair and placed it next to his bed.  He has learned to transition to the chair by using just his left leg and left hand and arm strength.  He sat for about 30-45 minutes each time and that was about all he could handle.  He said it's rough sitting straight up with the turtle shell on and his back gets sore.  I see great strides in what he's able to do and I know he does too.  Just not happening fast enough for a man who is used to going 90-nothing from dusk to dawn.

Still no word on release from rehab other than the tentative date of next Tuesday.  Then it's anticipated we will be placed in a holding pattern here in Roanoke until his doctor releases him to travel back to NC.   I'll keep you posted.
