my bike is a yamaha fj1100 '84. The turn signals would not work so i installed a universal flasher relay  :good2: it works perfectly.(double contact bulbs)  :i_am_so_happy:  I've read somewhere in this forum about the oil light would light up when I press the switch and would not start the bike(no crank) but sometimes it works and fires the bike right up .I'm pretty sure that all my connections from the right hand switch to the starter solenoid are ok. I'm having problems with the relay. What exactly do the other wires do? With the killswitch on and the ignition on, I bridged a wire connecting two of the wires from the plug(connecting to the relay) and it cranked the motor and started the bike. Any fix on this?  :morning2:

I have the same non start issue , , but only sometimes , , mine is a wire broken in the insulation behind the fairing, going to that relay, , changing relays didn't help as that's what I thought it first was, , will go months without doing the non start thing , then next day oil light will flash and that's it from the button , ,, that plug in the relay can work loose too ,, I ran some wire from the blue start wire near the relay under the seat through a switch and then to ground , until the fairing is off next time so I can splice new wires in, ,  :good2:
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

I recently replaced the same relay due to the turn signals working intermittently on my 84 FJ-1100.
I was a bit confused why the elec schematic showed 5 wires going to the flasher relay but physically had 9 wires going to the relay. While the relay was disconnected I could not crank the eng. The headlight would go out (and I think the oil light came on) so I knew the start switch was working.

The part abt you being able to crank the eng sometimes is confusing. Was that with the old relay connected?

There's a schematic in the "files" section for the FJ1100. It's possible the "starting circuit cut-off relay" may be incorporated within the flasher relay housing. Have to see if there's a 2 blue/white, 1 red/white and 1 black/yellow wires going to the flasher relay. (Seems like I do remember there being a red/white wire mixed in there)

These relays were used on a number of Yamaha bikes and can be found on ebay. I got mine for $15+shipping. :good2:

Gotta love those 2-strokes!!

I connected the 2 blue/white wires together. Problem fixed  :good2: For anyone who might find this useful the relay controls the safety switches.

Cool, just dont press your start swittch with the bike in gear, she will jump forward if on the side stand
