Well I am finally putting together the list of winter projects for the  89 FJ1200 I aquired Last January.

I could use some input by members on the projects and the items i am planning on buying.

I plan to get the following from RPM can you if you have tried the items give me an idea if it was worth it or if it was a total dog and stay away from the product.... I am really interested in the top 2 items..and if anyone has pictures of the top one. and if anyone did the brake light what did they have to do to adapt it?

Spin On Oil Filter Adapter
LED Smoke Brake Light
Engine Drain Plug Steel Gasket
Exhaust Gasket
FJ Steering Head Bearing/Seal Kit
Shift Lever Rubber
Vibranator - Yamaha FJ

Any help would be appreciated.

There are so many mods you can do you won't have time for them all in one winter. Are you looking for performance mods as well? Looks like you have a mix of repair and improve with your list. I really like the spin on, it was my first mod. That was my first taste, now I am hooked and have made many improvements, mostly performance but they also had a natural cosmetic improvement as well. The brake light looks good, I saw them in person this last weekend during the Napa ride. Its on my list as well. If you are doing the steering head bearings consider installing a zerk fitting, you can fill the steering head with grease, give it a shot every year and keep it properly lubed and free from corrosion.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Re: R.P.M.   WARNING: Aftermarket components from RPM will exceed OEM design    parameters...! Especially the suspension components.

From a safety standpoint I would suggest the top of the line brake pads, regardless if you have upgraded to Blue Dots or retain the original calipers. The improvement in performance is exceptional.

Nothing the gentleman from RPM sells is a 'dog' - it is simply not in his vocabulary...

Ride safe,

brakes and suspension for me, get those right and everything else is icing on the cake.

If you still have the oem rubber brake lines on your '89, replace those first. Just a suggestion.

3) Replace your old stock rubber brake lines.

I have done the Oil Filter Mod. Easy and straight forward, very inexpensive and well engineered mod.

I believe the LED tail light is a direct bolt on, plug and play unit.

From your list, I have installed the Vibrnators, spin on adapter, and the tinted LED tail light.

The first two are pretty straight forward, the light was another thing.

First, it installs very easy with only a small amount of trimming.
After I had it on the bike, I just wasn't crazy about the overall appearance of it. mostly the way it stuck out beyond where the stock lens did, so I pulled it all apart and installed the LED circuit board into a stock FJ lamp.
Personally, this is just what I wanted, and I am very pleased with the way it turned out.

Regardless what YOU want to do, Randy @ RPM is THE 1st place I turn for FJ parts.
I have been buying from him for a couple of years now and I have appreciated everything he has to offer and I would recommend him for anyone with an FJ that wants to keep it on the road for years to come.

His parts are 1st class and his shipping is outta sight! FAST!

This is the LED light that I installed. The plastic shell is identical to the stock light and bolts on easily. I will add photos of it lit up later tonight. Not a very good photo of the filter installed, but this will give you an idea... The filters that Randy @ RPM sells black ones.

I think in the end it's all about trust. Our FJ's are aging, not a lot of shops like to deal with the older bikes. Matter of fact I called my local Yamaha motorsports and they told me they don't work on Yamaha's older that 98! I was like WHAT! so when you find someone like Randy at RPM who is an FJ guru you kinda stick with it. And if something is not right he'll make it right. Can't ask for anything more. Not to mention all the FJ freaks on this forum, always willing to give sound and heart felt advice, because they love their FJ's as much as anyone. Wow que theme from "Brians Song."

is this an RPM LED light, looks a little different to the one on the website?

Spin On Oil Filter Adapter. Yes this will make changing your oil easy.

LED Smoke Brake Light. This can be very brite, you will need to check the voltage at the tail/brake light. My 89 was only showing about 9.5 volts so I installed a relay for the brake light.

Engine Drain Plug Steel Gasket. I keep a few of these at home and I have a spair in my on-bike tool kit.

Exhaust Gasket. If you need these you can polish your stock down pipes, they are stainless.

FJ Steering Head Bearing/Seal Kit. If you do this, please also install a ground strap from your upper triple clamp. These bearings last longer if they are not used as a conductor.

Shift Lever Rubber. Get two, I have to replace mine every year.

Vibranator - Yamaha FJ. I hear these work. I think I would also look at a Throtlemister, I like mine.

Additional ideas. Do this ignition relay mod, its cheep and it makes you FJ easy to start and it can give you a few more MPG.

I always install a pair of headlight relays to make the HL work at 100%.

Look into a fresh set of intake manifolds. RPM sells them and fresh ones make for a smooth running engine.

Good Luck!
