speedo scream 84-1100

My '84 speedo developed the speedo death scream last year, found and changed out the speedo, this one is doing the same thing.  I know the sound is coming from the hub of the speedo where the square cable end meets the speedo.
Has anyone disassembled the steel hub and lubricated in there?  I shoved a little grease in the end and seemed to stop it for 2 warm months.  Then back again.
I know if you don't fix it, the plastic gearing of the needle gets chewed up by the metail gearing from the hub. Done speedo.

Any insights?

Thanks  '84-1100 and '87 FZR-750R
