Carbs that have been "fixed" by previous owner

I'm finding myself in a bit of confusion on my carbs for my 89 FJ1200.  It seems that the previous owner at some point decided to do some work himself on the bike and he really shouldn't have :)

What I'm struggling through now is my carbs were "fixed" by him and I need to know what some "starting points" are for some adjustments.  I've had the bike for about 3 or 4 months now and have only put on about 250 miles and there has always been a lack of smooth carburetion and it hasn't wanted to idle.

I tried bringing the idle up with the idle adjustment screw, but I run out of threads in the adjustment before the engine gets to 1100 rpm.  I'm guessing that the synch screws are backed out too much allowing the throttle blades to be shut too far/too much slop in the throttle before the throttle blades start to open.  Is there a way to adjust the synch screws to get the throttle blades into a good "starting point" for adjustment and to allow proper adjustment of the idle rpm?

My next question is about how do you tell what manufacturer jets and needles are in your carb.  My needle has 6 adjustment slots(the clip is in the third from top with a half spacer on it on all carbs).  The pilot jet is a 37.5 which I believe is the stock one.  The main is a 118(I have vance and hines exhaust and unipods)...not sure what manufacturer this is.  I would just like to know what I have so that I can adjust from a known starting point.

Last one is that the attachment of the choke plungers seems to be off on my carbs(some are more open than others).  Is this adjustment to just ensure they are all closed fully when choke not applied?

thanks in advance for any and all help :)

That's a DJ main jet, so the needle is also likely to be the same.

Start by downloading the directions for a DJ kit and reading up a bit, that'll give you their recommended baseline.

thanks for the reply....I found out about 30 minutes after I posted that it was probably a dynojet kit in the carb from a google search(which pointed me to about 10 threads on this forum).  So for anyone that has trouble with the forum's built in search you can use google by typing the following into google search:

       site:fjowners.com <search terms>

example:

       site:fjowners.com fj1200 carb settings

Very handy and I found quite a bit of threads on this site that actually had to do with carb settings :)
