FZR-1000 fork seals

Spent the afternoon trying to replace fork seals on my 84 FJ-1100. The bike came with 41mm FZR-1000 forks when I bought it.
Checked www.powersportsplus.com and compared part#s for a 87 FZR-1000 and 84 FJ-1100. Same part# (3LC-23145-00-00).
Ordered a set.
Spent a couple of hrs trying to seat the new seals far enough to get the "washer" and snap-ring in. No luck. It's close, but no cookie.
Finally decided to compare the thickness of the new vs old seals. The old ones are definately thinner.
The old ones don't look like Yamaha parts. They say CCI on them.

I then went back and checked the parts breakdown to verify the parts #s are actually the same. They were, but now I notice the FZR-1000 does not show to have a "washer" between the seal and the snap-ring.

The FJ-1100 breakdown shows a "GASKET, UPPER CVR 1UPPER COVE" between the seal and the snap-ring.

Has anyone replaced fork seals on a 87-88 FZR-1000 and remember if there's supposed to be a "washer", "gasket" or anything else between the seal and the snap-ring???

The Washer that goes between the seal and the retaining clip on the early models was discontinued on later models of the FJ.

The '89 fork lowers I installed on my '85 would not allow the washer to be re-used. 

You should be fine omitting the washer and using just the retaining clip.

I was starting to think maybe the extra "washer" was something that came with a thinner aftermarket seal, to make up the gap.
The extra "washer" does work well to protect the seal while installing

In case anyone wants to know:
The 41mm (87-88) FZR-1000 forks take 14.4oz  (425 cm/3) of 10w oil or 5.63" (143mm) from the top with no spring and fully compressed.

I looked high and low on the net for that capacity info, with no luck. Tried calling a number of dealerships, but seems they ALL close on Monday..
Finally got a hold of Yamaha Motors (corporate?) in L.A. and they hooked me up.
