Here's the latest update from Janie (well, actually the last two updates - I'm on vacation):

Today (Monday 8/17) in rehab they cut back on the blood pressure medication Steve has been receiving.  His doctor also agreed to start using what he's been taking at home and I brought it in so that will start tomorrow.  His attitude is greatly improved today as he's able to sit up and get out of bed.  He attended a therapy session at the gum this morning and an in-room session this afternoon.  He's doing really well at manipulating from bed to chair and back as his strength improves.  Tomorrow the Social Services nurse will be talking with the doctors to formulate a plan for discharge and in-home care.  We will be staying in Salem at my cousin's house for a couple of weeks before returning to Louisburg.  Steve's follow-up appointment with the plastic surgeon is Sept 3rd.  After that visit we will get a referral to a doctor in NC for future visits.  Steve's determination is strong so I know he will do this all as quickly as possible.

Yesterday (Saturday 8/15/09) the doctor overdosed Steve on blood pressure medicine and he was wiped out and barely speaking most of the day.  Physical therapy was not willing to risk getting him out of bed so he skipped a day of therapy.  His buddies from the riding accident came to see him and he responded some, but not like he has been doing.  Today he appears better, but is starting to refuse even more pain meds, so he's in a bit of pain.  The nurse told me this morning he's accepting Tylenol only at this point.

Still not sure when or how we will be able to get him out of here.  It seems best to remain in Roanoke until his follow-up appointment with the surgeon 3 weeks post surgery, but we haven't made any decisions in that regard yet.  The problem is we don't have a vehicle large enough to transport him with his leg properly elevated and no wheel chair ramp at the house once we arrive.  After the post op visit he should be allowed to put some pressure on this leg and maybe even use crutches for a brief period.  That will make transsport AND entrance to the house easier.  Once inside, out home is one story so he should do OK.  Lots to think about.

Talk soon,
Janie
