1989 FJ1200 Exhaust

Thanks to all who read this.  I have a 1989 FJ1200 and the only exhaust I can find aftermarket is a V&H 4-1 Supersport #15301 for the 1987 vintage.  According to V&H, 15302 fits the 1989 FJ1200.  I spoke with V&H tech support in CA and they didn't have legacy info on that bike - great guys just that the bike is older than what they can support on the phones.

If anyone can help me with the information as to the differences, I'd be most appreciative.  If it's something as simple as modifying a bracket, I'm good with that.  I would even consider removing the center stand if absolutely necessary.  Currently the bike is complete with lower chin spoiler.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks you in advance,

Ed

I ran that version on my 90. It fit fine, except it is shorter so I had to bolt it to the rear set forward of the passenger peg.

Thanks for the info.  Did you need to make a special bracket?

I really don't want to spend the money on generic slip ons so I'd rather go with a whole system that will work well.

There is currently a listing for a Yoshimura complete exhaust system. it is for an 1100 so you would have to attach it with a bolt through the foot peg bracket .

I have a stainless Supertrapp from an 1100 on my 89. All that is needed is a bolt long enough, a pair of washers and a nut.

I have this pipe on my 89 FJ1200. It has the same dent in the pipe from hitting a bump 2-up on a right-hander and framing the pipe. That's the only time it has ever hit, though. It's a great pipe, loud and nasty sounding with no packing. Reminds me of a formula 1 car during acceleration. I packed it and it quieted it down considerably but at WOT, it still sounds healthy and bad to the bone. As far as performance, I've never ridden another FJ nor have I ridden this one with the stock pipe. All I can say is KOOKALOO! My bike pulls hard all the way from 2K to redline with a nice bump from 6K on.
You do have to remove it for oil changes so stock up on exhaust gaskets. Also, you'll want to powder coat it if you can because VHT doesn't last very long on it. I did a thorough prep before painting but did not do the VHT clearcoat. It didn't take long before looking dingy again.
I had to trim the bottom aft inner section of the chin spoiler to get it on. Just minor trimming with a dremel. Enough to clear the bottom two pipes.
I bought the bike with the pipe on and the center stand was absent so I assume the center stand and the pipe do not mix.
This is the only other example of this pipe that I have seen in the 3 years I've owned the bike. I tried to look for a replacement canister, after smashing mine against a guard rail, and could not find one. I contacted Yoshi and they said they no longer support this pipe and do not have replacemnt parts. I rebuilt the canister myself by having the end caps parted off on a lathe and fabricating the barrel from 6061 aluminum and having an aircraft welder weld on the end caps. It looks, sounds, and is more durable than new.
For the buy it now price of $175, I would definitely call this a worthy upgrade, unless you could fork over the $300+ for something newer. Then still, I'd even put this pipe up against many others.

To add to my comment from earlier. The attach point for the muffler is forward of the rear foot peg, thus requiring the use of a bolt, washers and a nut through the open section of the foot peg support. An option that I have been considering, is swapping the foot peg brackets with a set from an 1100. Then the pipe should bolt up as designed.

Good idea. The bolt through the footpeg mount hasn't caused any problems, although it may not look copacetic to the hardcore aestheticist.
