Starter replacement

So I am attempting starter replacement and am hoping others who have done this will chime in. Basically simple task  It's loose with power cable disconnected and according to Clymers I can remove it by pulling through left side. But I cant seem get it through. Friken close though. Although repair manual does not say so I about ready to remove the left side crankcase cover, which means clutch slave too. Is this necessary. If I remove the clutch slave, will I need to drain fluid and all the fun that along with that. I cant remember, I think so.

Clutch slave can be removed without re-bleeding, just don't squeeze the clutch with the slave off.

  Do not test the new starter with the clutch slave removed!  Regards, Pete.

On my 84, I need to loosen up the banjo bolt connected to the slave and rotate it out some to get to the bolt nearest it. I  just rotate out and then retighten bolt enough to prevent leaking while making repair.
Are you getting starter rebuilt or buying new one?  Starting engine with slave removed will blow out the rod slave pushes on, from what I read earlier.

I bought a new one, (from Randy of course) so will have a starter (that was working) for someone they may want it. My starter is ready for rebuild and I am tired of intermitten starting issues. I understand the new starter to be a lot better. I cant get the damn thing to clear by a fraction, no mater how much I cuss. I will be back to it soon.

Thanks for the replies. Job done. I ended up taking the cover off. Easy then.
