Turn signals not working.

Help me please!
I have an 85FJ1100 and I am having turn signal issues...they won"t work. They work very sporadically at best. I spoke to a guy at a motorcycle salvage company and he explained to me that the stock relays are garbage and are finicky about how much wattage they draw. He suggested I use a different (generic) relay and sold me a Emgo M86722 flicker relay, (#413) 2-pin 12V/10W.
It only has the 2-pins, he said I would need to play around with what wires to use on my bike. I have been trying but haven't had any luck. I unplugged the stock relay and used jumper wires in the sockets on my bike...won't work.
I would rather use a cheap aftermarket relay if possible to get my signals to work. If anyone can tell me what I am doing wrong or tell me the best way to achieve this a different way I would greatly appreciate it!

have you taken the switch apart and cleaned the conections, the early switches have 2 copper arms that are the indicator contacts, they can get bent away over time and dont connect properly, clean them and bend them back instraight, may be the problem as ive had my 84 do it , , till i updated to xr switches  :good2:
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

I would also look to the switch. Lube mine 2 or 3 times a a year with silicone spray. Hope this helps?  :unknown:

Thanks for the tips guys, I will give both things a try.  One thing I left out is that the stock relaymakes a buzzing sound when I turn the signal's on.  I assume it's because it is not getting enough juice to make the proper connection? Does that seem like a reasonable deduction?
I would still love to know how to hook up (what wires to use)  the aftermarket relay,  any ideas?

not sure about hooking up an aftermarket relay, as for the buzzing , yep most likely a bad connection in the switch, or if you have fitted led indiators  without the load resistors they will not work right either , causing the relay to buzz like its trying to work

I worked in motorcycle shops for over ten years. The Emgo stuff was very cheap. That relay probably won't work since it is a two wire not a three. If you don't want to spend the money for a new Yamaha one. Try Ebay for a used one. JMO hope this helps?  :unknown:

woops, should say xjr, should be instructions on here if you search , as it was awhile ago when i fitted them, ill check later, but all wires are colour coded the same except one , that conected seperate, , you even gain hazard lighs for whatever reason  :scratch_one-s_head:
