Speedometer incorrect

I rode past a speed scanner the other day on the FJ, and the sign said I was doing 38mph, but the speedometer was reading a bit over 45, I have noticed to keep up with traffic that usually moves about 60mph I'm running almost 70mph on the speedo. Are they just off from the factory? I wondered about running a taller tire on it to try and correct it, it has a 120/80/16 on the front right now which I'm pretty sure is stock, but it seems like to get any taller I'd need to go wider, which I'm really unsure of since these wheels seem relatively narrow. I don't ride it hard in the corners or anything, so I'm not hugely concerned with the performance factor. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

Don't expect much from the oem speedos in much of anything.  They can be recalibrated as desired, for a fee (see other current threads as well as in the archive/files subsection).

If you're going to fiddle with the front wheel and tire assembly, improve it, rather than just going taller.  Wider and taller is great and all, unless you wanna turn the thing.

Foreign Speedo in San Diego can make  your speedo accurate.  [ no affiliation ]  Look in the Files section under General Maintenence to get their number. I have my speedo in there now to fix the death howl.

Went for a ride and found that my speedo was out about 10K. I also had a screw vibrate out of the face, so now I guess I will have quit putting off taking the fairing off. Anybody have this happen to them? The old girl also quit me just as I pulled off the main highway, so I am going to have to do the flapectomy as well, other than that it was a great ride and I really enjoyed the kookaloo.
