Can I install earlier year ('86, '87) front forks on my '89 fj1200?  I know I will have to deal with the anti dive but I cannot find '89 forks in good condition on My project. I am concerned with the larger wheel fitting

The brakes won't work, so not really, no.  89-93 should fit without changes.

Patience and Ebay are your friends. You really dont want to go backwards with fork technology. Post on the parts wanted list to see of someone has a late model set of lowers that are available if not look at Ebay daily to see if someone will sell the parts you need. You wont be happy buying or using the older forks. JMO
