I've received an email response to an ad I'd placed in a local on-line rag to sell off a few bits and pieces that are cluttering up my work-space...

I smell a rat but I'm trying to work out their "angle".

Does anyone know what their intended modus operandi is?

Here is a copy and paste of what they wrote:

Thanks for the swift response and do as well advise on the least amount you will like to give it away as i am buying this for Dad and due to the nature of my job and location...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.

As for the payment..i can only pay via the fastest and secure way to pay online(PayPal) here.

I have a private courier agent that will come for the pick up after the payment have been made ...so no shipping included and With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the courier services company agent so you don't have to worry about that.

You can now send me your PayPal email so i can pay in right away and also include your address in your reply. If you don't have a paypal account, you can easily set up one...log on to www.paypal.com.au and sign up its very easy... i would have loved to talk to you on phone but i work mainly offshore, our phone is down on the rig right now due to bad weather, that was why i sent you a text, i even wonder how my message deliver to your phone but for now we can only communicate through the same mailing channel.await your reply asap.

Thanks

xxxxxx

It's a scam -

Googling "PayPal Scam" came up with this one -Sound familiar ?

Looks like the scammers are moving to other websites apart from just Ebay now.

I put my bike up for sale on Bikesales yesterday, a CBR 900RR, for around $6000. Within a few hours I received an email from yahoo email address, saying he was interested in purchasing my bike, and wanted to know how low I would go.

I replied that I didn't really want to go much lower, so I would knock $300 off.

I get an email back saying the following;

"Thanks for the swift response...I am willing to offer you $5,600 for it.due to the nature of my job and location...i will not be able to come for inspection,am a very busy type as i work long hours everyday,i have gone through your advertisement and i am satisfied with it.

To me, it seems like a scam, and if so – I can't believe they are now moving onto websites like this and trying to scam cars and bikes etc.

Yes I get that, but how does it lead to losing your vehicle/bike/parts ?

What's their intention ? To get you to part with it before you have the money ?

They pick up your bike, then tell paypal the bike was misrepresented.  Paypal locks your account so you have no access to your money and you have no bike either.

Spot on. I had a mate lose a shit load of money here in West Aust, they use the same scam on him selling a car on E-Bay. They got the car, he couldn't get his money.
My new policy for the rare occasion, I sell crap on line, is cold hard folding in my hand, direct bank deposit, or bugger off. I might lose an occasional sale, but it's the only way you are guaranteed to get paid these days.

Cheers

Couldn't you just tell the "buyer" that you require a week (or more) to get Paypal to forward the payment to you.  You could also require that they add the paypal fees for withdrawing funds.  If they object, offer them Direct Deposit to your bank account.

I just sold our boat via craigslist.  Plenty of scam inquiries. I've sold the odd item now and then.  My response is always the same  - you pick it up in person and bring cash.

Luckily, the boat sold to a somewhat local older couple who came with nice pictures of old Ben Franklin.

What I dont get is pay pal locking your account because the item was misrepresented? Surely the only way that could happen is if the account holder and no one else notifys them to lock their account. It seems under this scenario pay pal is secure for the purchaser but not the recipent if someone was to fall for this scam. I've received one of these emails before via car sales .com.au. I thought it was a scam and emailed the bloke back and said I'd reduce the price of my car by $2k if he'd ''meet up'' with (not at my home address) to look at my car and take it away on the spot. Not surprisingly I never heard back...pity really because he/they had an a slightly unpleasant experience waiting for them.
