Older Yamaha mechanic says that use of fuel additive like SEAFOAM can damage outer surface of floats in 89 FJ1200 carbs causing them to absorb fuel and sink or at least set lower than set when they are dry. Has anyone ever heard of this, and if so are there any alternative to the stock floats, maybe something less than 47$ each? This was a CA bike and has 2 carbon canisters and a bunch of hoses and a valve called a VENT VALVE that has 12 volts applied when main switch is ON. Has anyone trashed this valve and all the hoses and canisters?

I have never heard or witnessed any over the counter additive deteriorate the floats.

I have new floats for $26.00 so you have another option. Most people remove & abandon the full canister system.

Has anybody ever weighed the floats from the 36mm mikunis on a 1200? How uniform were they in weight. Come on someone must have some floats and a good Tiajuana markeying scale. I come up with 8.66g,8.59g,8.74g, 8.71g. Are they all this varied?

received, thanks, better option than around here. Please see later post RE float weight.

That's only 1.7% difference between the lightest and heaviest float.  I wouldn't call that a huge discrepancy in the non-precision manufacturing world.

It's not like they're being used to weigh gold.

soaked em all 5 hours. shook off, blowed excess off, weight didn't change, in fact 1 weighed less. (probably blowed speck of something away. Going to try the hose on drain ,fuel height (3mm below carb body) while clamped level in vise next. Will a low float  adjustment (just a wee bit)show up at top rpm or at all rpms?

Check in the "files" section. Lots of carb info there. I set mine at 22mm and runs great.    http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=6580.0 Make sure the float moves up and down freely and dosn't bind.

It's called production tolorances, I believe this is the reason you are advised not to mix the parts up when removing or replacing..
