hi guys brain teaser for ya,   i am all ready to swap out the rear wheel on my 3xw abs, the thing is has anyone done or heard of
fitting the abs ring onto a none abs wheel?  just thought ide ask before i start grinding drilling an hitting, swearing

   cheers ron

hein

Hi Ron.

I'm going to assume that you want to convert to a 17" wheel and retain the ABS. You didn't mention what donor wheel you are planning on using but I can assure you that any 17" wheel you pick will not easily be converted to the ABS function especialy using the drill, grind, hit and swear method. Can it be done, yes. Has it been done, probably. Can you do it? That depends on your tool inventory. At the very least you would need a lathe that can swing a 17" wheel,a bridgeport style mill and a tig welding setup for aluminum. A background in fabrication and design would be helpful. Have a close look at the service manual for the ABS system and how its setup on the rear wheel and make your decision on how or if to proceed.

If having both ABS and a 17" wheel is important the cheaper and easier method, relatively speaking, would be to convert the rim section of your wheel. Kosman Specialties in California can easily convert a 16/3.5 into a 17/5.5 wheel. I've had three wheels, different types, done by Sandy in the last 30 years and the results have been great. Judging by the 3xw reference I'm guesing your from the U.K. and this would be cost prohibitive so look towards local shops that can do the same.

Hein.
What do you mean, you don't have a lathe?

thanks or the reply hein, 1st  the wheel is yzf/fzr   basicly same wheel all the milling and lathe work have been carried out by me,
yep i have a lathe and milling machine but no where big enough to fit a bike wheel in,i wish,
as for get the rim done, i have never heard of anywhere here in the uk that can do this type of work, must check up on that,
i have heard of the wheel from a yam gtr 1000 being used and retaining the abs but there like hens teeth

looks like  ill be loosing the abs then , well for now at least

Ron, yep Hein nailed it.
They take your existing 16" rim (with the abs ring) cut off the edges of the rim and weld on a wider 17" band on your existing rim.
