Weak Battery that does not have the capacity to start when hot as the electrical resistance is higher.

Or, you need a new Starter

It sounds like it could be the HOT starting issue that most FJ's have ... I believe the fix is just to open the throttle if starting HOT

With open gas - works easily. If to consider that to it it is difficult to twist on hot, and gas helps, then the blow from where is audible??? Carburetors didn't flow!!!

Check the voltage drop to the starter when turning over the starter. add a jumper wire as a ground/earth to eliminate the ground wire being a issue. I don't know if it's been brought up yet but you might want to check the battery too.
