With Randy and Travis disagreeing on rev limits, I'll point out that the OEM tach is prolly off a bit.  10.5k vs 11.5k is ~10% error, and utterly not surprising.

On a reasonably stock motor though, not much point going past a true 9500ish.  Because of the gear spacing in the trans, you really only need to wind first and fourth up (well, and fifth, obv) unless you've done something to really shift the torque around in the rev band.

Arnie, I love your description of shims :)  You can also use things like chopped up beer cans as shim stock to tighten up a tired cushdrive.

Jes, all the info is here.  A long session just reading the shop manual and looking at posts here would open your knowledge base a fair bit.  Before making plans, you gotta know why you should plan what you plan, or you haven't a plan at all!

SHIM - A thin piece of material used to adjust thickness of a main item.  In the case of the FJ you have shims that sit between the cams and the valve buckets to adjust lash, you have shims in the transmission to adjust clearance between various gears, and you can have shims that adjust the height of the carb needle.
There are probably others, but these are the 3 most common uses of shims in the FJ.

If you had a 4 leg stool and wanted it shorter you'd cut all the legs a certain amount.  Knowing how deft you are with tools, its likely that you'd cut at least one shorter than the others.  You could use a shim to take up that gap.  :-)

Oldtmdude had a great suggestion for you.  More time reading, much less time typing.

perfect explanations of shim use, and yes its the valve shims meant , don't let them get tooling tight that the Fj won't ever start, silly meee, pays to have 2 modes of transport for work
unless you ride bikes, I mean really ride bikes, then you just won't get it

84 Fj1100  effie , with mods
( 88 ) Fj 1200  fairly standard , + blue spots
84 Fj1100 absolutely stock standard, now more stock , fitted with Fj12 twin system , no rusted headers for this felicity jayne

QuoteIt seems like every other day, you've got some long rambling post about some obscure problem or a new plan to rebuild it and, frankly, I've stopped trying to keep up.

No disrespect but I whole-heartily agree with David R. here, Sr. Member in a few months...interesting
