So I have been thouroughly reading my haynes manual and I noticed a lot of the checks which I should have done long ago require the bike to be on its centre stand...which I dont have(for whatever reason I dont know)

Since I would never park the bike on its centre stand anyway is there a way to do most of these checks still without purchasing it, or do I need to start investing in that too??

Jesse,

Most of those checks that they say to do while on the centerstand are either so the bike is upright or has the rear wheel off the ground.  A "paddock stand" will perform both these functions.  You could also use a couple of auto jack stands to support the bike.

However, since the bike came with a centerstand they assume you have one, and that its convenient to use.  Before you go spending more $$ on a centerstand, see if there is another way for you to support the bike without paying out $$.  Also check that a centerstand won't interfere with your exhaust.

Usually better than a centerstand anyhow, though not as portable :)

Thanks Arnie after reading what you said about the exhaust I remembered reading a couple other posts about centre stands being removed for the exhaust

As it happens I have a buddy who has one of those race bike stands, just spoke to him and he said he would borrow me it when needed as his bike seldom stands...

I very much like the Cyclecat USC1 I have.  Lifts the bike right up off the side stand, and drops it back down just as gently, and confidently.  Others use the simpler kind to great effect, so I'm sure they work fine, but agian, I really like the offset lifting of the Cyclecat.  They are not cheap though.
