I think you are asking about the flower pot looking part that goes on the spindle.

the picture of it on the bench is the correct  way , and the pic on the bike is wrong.

it goes on upside down and the washers and spring go between it and the spindle.

Yup, Thanks Mark.   Those are pictures I took. The bottom picture is the correct way as Mark O said.

As I remember, when I pulled the fork apart (top picture) the spindle fell off/out so I slid it back on to show it in the picture, but didn't pay attention to the direction and didn't pick it up when I was posting it.  I doubt it was that way when I took it apart, however like I said, it fell out when pulling the slider off the fork tube.

Good eye gilou for finding that mistake, sorry that it may have f&%-ed up your assembly.

I'm not certain of it's true function and consequently how much of an issue having it installed upside down would be.  I'm under the assumption that this "spindle" just helps locate the bottom of the damper rod, but that's just a guess.  That said, the top picture is still wrong, and should be noted.

To the administrator of the Modification Files:  Is there any way to put a note on that picture so this error does not perpetuate?

Thanks

Mark

the tapered spindle (upside down flower pot) is also known as a bottoming cone..... on hard hits the oil pushes the flower pot up against the spring washers in order to allow excess oil to flow back into the fork leg... by passing the damping system to keep the forks from locking up.
