Hi all, i have a set of later model coils , would the work on my 84, i know the ohm rating is lower ? if they would work .what wire goes to what terminal, completly different to the old 84 set up , shouldnt be to hard as its only 4 wires but

Two wires should be the same color.  One of each to each coil, and the different color'd wires go one to each coil.  If it runs funny, swap the individually colored ones (or the plug wires).

Started looking things up and I found at least three variations for which ignition was used on what!  Nice consistent info out there, ugh.  One source said all FJ1x00 were TCI ignitions, one said the 1100 models were TDI and the 12's were TCI, and one says that the pre-88 US and pre-91 UK models were TCI with the remainder being DCI.  Fuck, I don't know what to believe anymore, my faith is shaken.....

Looking at one chart that I found for dyna (aftermarket) coil application list, the advise given was to ensure an equal to stock or higher than stock resistance.  Lower will overheat and torch them (more current from less resistance).  So if you've measured your coils and the replacements are less resistant (lower ohms), don't use em.

So, with all of that said, according to the Clymer (which was closest to hand when I was looking for the spec), both ignition types need coils with 2.4-3.0 ohms of resistance across the primary (low voltage) side.  So you should be okay.  If I'm wrong, you'll blow up your black box and probably never be able to figure out what the hell to replace it with.  If it works, don't futz with it; if it don't work, then it's your call.

Wow , thanks mate you excelled yourself , i didnt find any info .the tricky part is the 12 coils dont have the usual wires coming from them ( gray/orange /red) may just make up some jumper wires and see if i can fluke it, have spare ignition boxes if i toast one , 5ea-10 26l are what the coils are ,sorry should of had that before , thank you for the info

I bought the coils believing they were late model fj ones, they are actually xjr, and they check out at 3ohms on the low voltage side

The Transistor Controlled Ignition (TCI) has 2 pickup coils 85-87. So that is all the 1100's and some of the 12's

In 88 (3rd gen) the Digital Controlled Ignition (DCI) was used, making it possible to use just one Pick up coil.
The Digital ignitor also controls the Electric fuel pump.

When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

I have one of the dci units , but not going to mess with the electrics that much,
