Thanks for all the assistance with carb and clutch prep which has allowed me to get this 10 year dormant machine on the road again. But I believe there may be the frequent problem with the second gear slipping/jumping.I can tolerate it for now but is this something you can tackle at home? And what cost are you looking at to repair this issue typically?.......1985 FJ1100  :flag_of_truce:

If you pay someone it will be costly ,I bought 2 bikes and did both of them so its not that hard imo.I bought a undercut gearset and new shift forks for the 85 and then swaped it out with the junk in the bike.I bought a parts bike after that that had a good undercut trans so I put that in the second bike I bought. If you do it yourself might run $100-$200 depending on what part's cost.

Second gear you can fix only by replacing second gear wheel and connected with them fifth gear wheel. The gear wheels are connected by claw clutch which is the problem in early FJ.
Best solution is change whole gearbox from later models - after 88'. It's cheaper. Later gearbox fits without any problem. I have 3CV gearbox in 36Y/47F engine.
Also you may open engine without removing cylinder head - just open bottom part of crankcase. You can do it by yourself if you have time, tools and some experience in mechanics.

Go with the later shift forks, 91+.  Once you have the trans out, it may be able to just get undercut instead of replaced.  I'd take a used undercut trans before a perfect stock one any day.
