Has anybody done a LED brake/park light modification for a 84/85 FJ11? Any photos or links would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers  :drinks:

I haven't changed over yet but planning to on my 1990.  The brake tail light is simple.  They make a bulb with the same base as stock but with led bulbs usually about 13 bulbs.  I am presently wiring up led accent lights on the bike to light up the engine, rear wheel area, and front wheel, plus added some to license plate.  When I added the led turn signals I had to add a resister to make them blink.  Not enough amp to let the flasher know they weren't burned out.

Might add that they are a little pricey but very visible.

okay, so give. what did it take to accomplish that?

hi Fred
From what I have seen, Yamaha led tail lights have the same colored wires as our fjs, so I bought an r1 tail light (eBay 150337397632) some thing like the 1 there, however I was looking for cheapest as I was going to build my own circuit pcb and wanted the components  (electronics tech is my job)

This may be better (380116260740) r6, and what I would look @ now

I am using ebay.com so u get an idea on price etc and me been this side of the pond etc etc
ok back to the light, I split the r1 light so I just had the pcb and wires, I used a good sharp knife to crack it open were it joined, I used the pcb and the lens diffuser (not the outside cover u see on the bike) as I was not sure if this helped the led pattern

The fj light, the red plastic cover is sought of glued in, but if you use a hot air blower/ wife's hair dryer etc (good luck with the last en) u can heat the glue up and slowly remove the lens

I fitted the r1 light assy to the lens with some screwed support posts and plastic threaded screws, I had them @ work and it works etc, it was a case of looking @ the problem and making it fit

I soldered the wires to the bulb connector, as I said early same color wires, all the time I was thinking I don't want to make a mess of my wiring loom etc, keep the bike as OEM etc, and refiitted the lens cover into the housing, tip here was to remove most of the old glue, once it is fitted back use low melt glue or silcon seal etc , again u get the idea

Ok one little problem for this side of the pond was u need a white light to shine down onto the number plate (your tag plate), I wired some white led's pointing down to keep peeps happy for my yearly test, dont think its as much of a problem your side

So does that give you some ideas??, any more Q, let me know

regards mark

Fred

Thanks Mark,

Just one thing I'm not clear on. Everything you needed to wire it came with the donor assy.? Except the white LEDs, which I will need also. The heavy German heritage here in Pennsylvania demands that things be as the engineers designed it. Looks cool, now I have one more thing to add to my mod list. :good:

Thanks,
Fred

Hi Fred

QuoteJust one thing I'm not clear on. Everything you needed to wire it came with the donor assy

yes , i bought it for the components,  but when i got my donor fj light apart and the r1 light, i offered it up against the lens and  it was gona fit

(380116260740) r6, now with this been more square, it look like it will fill more space in the fj assy, but have not measured it.

OK as for the tag plate light, here in the UK it must be white, so i just fitted 3 hi power white leds while it was open, but may be an easy way would be some thing like this (eBay 1204068816040) or (180346298885) )140315121715) but i think u are getting the idea

OK on the German heritage, will be in germany in 3 weeks for our annual visit to the German fj owners group ( http://www.kerryrawsonbikes.fotopic.net/c1509329.html last year)

sorry i did not take any pics when i assembled it, as @ work @ the time
