Plug wires, resistor core or steel? 8mm ok w/FJ plug boots?

I'm looking to assemble a upgrade to my '84's ignition. I have a 5* advance rotor.
I know about the Dyna2000 ignitions and everyone loves them but they are out of my price range. :flag_of_truce: Yes, I know that they're good.

I have bought a HyperPak ignition from these folks in New Zealand: http://www.erd.co.nz/products/xjfj.html
It's plug and play with my 84' Unlike oem, No vacuum advance on these ignitions so the vacuum port is capped at the carb.
This digital unit features a longer dwell time which will be perfect with my planned Dyna coil upgrade (green 3ohm)

When I put in the new coils, I also plan on doing the relay mod which powers the Dynas directly off my battery. Works great on my headlight.

I'm looking for the 3 ohm Dyna greens now. Anyone have a set they would like some Xmas money for?

I'm running Uni filters so I have a lot of room in front of my battery box, where I plan on putting the new coils. They should be a bit cooler there rather than on the top of a hot engine. I plan to run the plug wires down below the carb heat shield, up the back of the cylinder block between #2 and#3, and up to the head. I plan of running the 4 plug wires individually (never together) thru 4 heat insulating sleeves. It's kinda hot at the back of the motor.
Steve Conkin showed me how he did this on Thor, his HSR 1350cc FJ.
Anyhoo...
1) Plug wires. I'm looking at Accel 8mm yellows. Should I get a carbon resistor core or steel wire core? Make a difference either way? (I'm leaning towards steel)
2) Just to confirm that the fat 8mm or 8.8mm wire will fit in the plug boots.
3) Plug boots. After 27 years it's time for new ones. OEM? or...?  Order thru Randy? Zanottis?

Comments and suggestions are welcome!   Thanks folks.   Fr.Paddy

Paddy, when I replaced the OEM coils on my 91 with the green coils I used a set of Dyna wires.

I used the boots that came on the wires and have had no problem what so ever. I also found a pair of Dyna green coils on ebay for a deal.

Thanks Eric, I can't tell with no length info posted, but looking at the picture, I'm not sure those will be long enough.
I guesstimate I'll need about 26-30" on the plug wires to get down and back to the battery box location.
I'll check this measurement out tomorrow when I (once again) take my tank and carbs off. sigh.

Cheers amigo!

The O.E. sparkplug caps have the resistor built into them as the use the stainless tell solid core wires. The aftermarket systems must use the carbon core wire and the standard sparkplug ends. There have been many documented instances of ignition problems using solid core wires with aftermarket CDI ignition systems.

So if you are changing the to DYNA coils you will need to use they wire they recommend.

You can also use the factory coils, which are also 3.0 ohms, and replace the wire with solid core to relocate the coils if you desire. If you go that route I have the O.E. spark plug boots in stock.

Pat,
I was able to mount my Dyna coils in the stock location using the factory mount and a slightly longer bolt.  Alternately, Jon Cain used to offer a speciality bracket for mounting Dyna coils in the stock location.  Do you want to mount them in the airbox area?  If the factory coils survived all these years, the stock location may not be all that bad.

I would think you'd want to limit that high voltage in the plug wires to as short a length as possible.
I also used the Dyna wires.  I wish they had a slightly angled cap, but they work.

Pat if you decide to use the Dyna coils in the original location its pretty simple to get them in.

no problems for years..

Okay, Thanks guys. That's good info. I think I will go ahead and try the stock location with the Dyna wires.
Eric, thanks for the pict. Those terminals look kinda close to the grounded mounting post. I see you have them well insulated.
Do you think that there is any way to get a smig more clearance for peace of mind?

Thanks again.

I didn't need the extenders on mine.  For insulation, I slid some clear plastic tubing over the mounting post.  It was all a little snug and I did trim off the outside edge of the fame side rubber cushions.  I'll see if I still have pics of my installation.  I lost my computer hard drive last week and am still in the process of recovery

Eric, do you still have a copy of what I sent to you?

Pat, I just did the Dyna 2000 job last weekend.

I put the brain box in the tail section and mounted Grey coils in the OEM position with OEM mounting bolts.
Had to grind the coil mounting hole rivets back to flush to make the bolt fit.

At the front, I remover the plastic mounting caps completely....... won't fit at all with them as the two coils side by side are too wide.

I used grey 8mm Dyna suppression leads also.

It all works just fine.

Okay thanks Harv. It's hard to visualize what you say, but when I get in there I'm sure it will become obvious......Cheers!

Pat,
Sometimes it helps to procrastinate.  I just uploaded some pictures of my Dyna coil install in the Misc FJ Gallery.  They were still on my camera memory.  The bolt is longer than stock.  I used clear tubing to insulate the mounting bracket.  In further thinking about it, I should have probably put the ground wire on the inside coil terminal to avoid potentially shorting the +12V directly to ground.   I'd link to the pics, but that's too complicated.

DavidR.

Thanks David, very much appreciated! I'll take pictures of my install, then combine mine with yours and Eric's into the File section for future reference.

Cheers!
