Sintered pads with Stock Rotors

Hello All,

Are the Sintered pads safe to use with the stock 90 FJ front rotors?  I hear that it is advisable to have steel rotors to use these pads.  I am not sure if the 90 FJ uses steel or iron rotors....

OEM FJ rotors are stainless steel.

I bought a set (all three positions) of sintered pads this spring to go along with my new EBC rear rotor. In my opinion, after 4000 miles use the first part of this summer (with the stock braking components), there was no advantage to the sintered pads. They marked up my front OE rotors some, but that damage was negligible. My brand new EBC rear rotor, however, took a serious thrashing from those pads, and I hardly use my rear brake. My level of concern on this was high enough that I replaced the rear pads with OE Genuine Yamaha pads, and I have a set of new OE pads for the front which will go in after next spring's de-winterization.

All I'm saying is that I think that there may be better alternatives.

Brook

...... Now I am concern,... I just bought front and rear Galfer rotors, and the full set of the sintered pads.

Thanks Arnie and Mike for your response.  So, do not use the Sintered Pads seems to be the consenses.

I wouldn't go that far, sir. I can only speak for my own experience with them; individual results may vary. I believe that other forum members have or are currently using them and may have a different opinion. I'd suggest that before making an "informed" decision, I'd give a little time for others to pipe in as their own experiences with the sintered pads before making your final decision.

I use sintered HH pads on my bikes. I've never been a fan of EBC pads but the OEM sumitomo pads that come with the monobloc calipers work very well and I have not seen abnormal wear on my OEM rotors (same as non abs 89+fj) or my aftermarket. Pretty sure there are many FJ'ers running the "blue dot" monoblocs who would agree.

+1 for using the OEM brake pads with the FZ1 monoblocs and FZ1 stock rotors. Very good braking ability and little wear on rotors.

I like the OEM Blue Dot pads as well... I've got a pair or two left for the fronts.

I just put a set of EBC HH on the rear right before the ECFR, so the jury is still out on them, but the initial impression is that while they may be okay power-wise for two-up riding, it's overkill otherwise.  I will probably replace them with EBC blacks.

I plan to get  a couple of sets of the 'fan approved' Chinese Galfer knock-off rotors soon, as well (I have 3 sets of wheels).

Brook, if you're talking about the Galfer "Wave" rotors, Galfer dealers often (almost always) send out a set of HH pads when shipping the Wave rotors. Galfer "strongly recommends" the use of HH pads with their rotors.

Just to see what would happen, I put a Galfer wave rotor on the rear of my bike and left the oem Yamaha pads in the caliper. Holy shit. In less than 2 weeks the Wave rotor ate the oem pads.... and I don't use the back brake....often.

A few years back when I talked to an EBC rep, he said do not use HH pads on the stock FJ ventilated rotors.

Pat,
Why are you using so much brake?

I probably replace rear brakes twice as often as front.

...... Pat thanks for the reply,  yes, they are the wave rotors,...... If they come with a set of pads, that would be great..... I just hope, I can use both without any issues.

..... by the way, I bought a Penski 8983 rear shock, from Lindeman Enginering.... Jim was the salesman.

                                            thanks, Jeff

That's only because you live in Texas and have a Harley Davidson rear tire.  You know the quote: "don't touch that front brake boy!"

Pat Conlon

Hey Jeff, when you say, "I just hope I can use both without any issues", do you mean both types of brake pads?
What I am saying is don't use the FJ oem organic pads on Wave rotors, use a HH pad.

COOL BEANS on your new Penske shock. The 8983 double adjustable (compression/rebound) is the way to go.
Yeppers, it's big bucks but a worthy investment. Kinda neat to reach down and click it to #1 soft for freeways, then when the twistys appear, click it to #3 or #4, then back to #1 for the ride home.
IMHO The rear shock upgrade is #1 on the mod list for our FJ's, with the 17" rims and R-1 brakes a close second.
That oem FJ shock was weak sauce the day the FJ rolled off the assembly line.

After you get about 100 miles on it, let us know how you like it.   Cheers!  Pat

...... Hi Pat,...  I mean the rotors and pads... If the front rotors come with pads I will use them, if not, I will use the ones that I bought.
.... and about the 100 miles,........ I have a long list of things that I am changing, to the bike.
.... I need to find a machine shop in my area, that I can trust. [need easy].... for the big bore kit.
.... A new paint job.
.... disassemble, clean and install the Omni 1.05- T/D springs, in the front forks.
.... I am changing the turn signal and starter switch boxes, over to FZ1 boxes.
it's going to take about three to four weeks, before I receive the rear shock. So, I am looking at, about a month before, I can get back on the road.    I hope !!
