Hi all.
i am new here and would like to introduce myself. I live in South Africa, I got my 85 fj 1100 just shy of a year and am really enjoying it.

Welcome here Moto Moto, Where about is South Africa are you?  A buddy of mine lives near J-Burg -say the roads are more appropriate for a dual-sport than a sport bike.  As such he's got a KTM 950 Adventure.  Any way, someone here will steer you down the right path I'd bet.

Just a stab in the dark really, but check for a vacuum leak.  With the engine running, spray WD-40 on the intake boots, see if the engine changes RPM.  If it does, you have a leak.

As far as carbs go, definitely look at the instructions posted out here on this site regarding carb maintenance, dissassembly and cleaning.

Take it easy!

Dan
