I remembered I have forks from an early zx1000, which has much stiffer springs than stock FJ1100s. The catch is the spring diameter which is (measured) 2mm less, in your experience is this too small to work, would they bind?

FJ1100 springs: 34.5mm
ZX1000 springs: 32.5mm

You mean bind against the inside of the fork tubes?

I'd be more concerned that they'd rattle a bit, and they could end up being non-linear as they flopped around some.

Dunno....Why put the effort in using someone's old springs? Select the compression rate you want, and order new fork springs, they are sooooo cheap.

If you're thinking emulators, all the more reason to buy new springs and not use a smaller diameter spring.  The Race Tech Emulators require a minimum ID diameter for them to work properly. (can't remember what it is) The 1.0 Sonic brand springs I used were close to the minimum but large enough by a few thousandths to be used. I would assume the Race tech springs meet the minimm I.D. requirement.

I think you'd like the emulators...smooths out the high speed damping bumps.
