I am considering installing a set of USD YZF750R forks on my 89 FJ. Anyone do it yet or any better suggestions?

I keep wondering when someone is going to do a big-piston-fork on the FJ.  I can only assume that since its not been done, it's a real pain/ requires significant surgery.

Live hardy, or go home.

Check length, check speedo compatibility, check fork travel, check steering head bearings + length, etc etc etc.

Anything fits anything, but some are more work than others.

Yes, Marc Rittner, Klavdy and Gary Mastro have the YZF750 USD's on their FJ's.

Here's a write up on the YZF750 fork mod on our FJ's: http://www.fjmods.btinternet.co.uk/MarcRittner2.htm

I have the FZR USD's on my '84 FJ which are the same forks as the YZF except that the YZF has external screw adjustments for compression and rebound settings. A nice feature.
On my FZR USD's the compression/rebound settings are done via the cartridge shim stacks internal to the shock. IOW to change the settings you have to take the FZR shock apart.
It took me only 2 disassembles to get the correct number of shims on the Race Tech FZR cartridges.
Once they're set, I have left them alone.
The YZF750 fork adjustments are made with a screw driver in 15 seconds.....Great feature for a track bike, but are external rebound/compression screw adjusters really needed on a street bike?

The USD fork mod is a nice up grade on our heavy FJ's. The front end is much more planted/stable.  Cheers!

I have been gathering parts to get the job done.  It has been over 9 month and I will hopeful have everything in the next 3 months or so.  I have keep the cost below $300 hundred so far, but I still need the fender, axle, and speedometer gear drive.  I am going to weld up the bump stops on the lower triple tree, and I am going with something like this on for the top mount  http://www.spieglerusa.com/cfm/sbk.cfm   or something similar to this brand.

Good luck.  I know Marc is a great guy and will help in anyway possible once you decide to get the project underway.

Thanks again guys for your input. Decided to stay with current set up;'95(non cartridge) YZF600 forks(Racetech refurb w/.95kg springs, seals, bushings and emulators),fender, wheel, speedo drive, cable and EBC 300mm rotors clamped by FZ1 master cylinder, Goodridge steel braided lines and blue dot calipers. This project has become a financial sink hole, time to stop. Not complaining, just like booze, know when to say enough is enough. Thanks again for all your help.

I am with you.  I have learned to decide on the mod I want to make, set a time frame, and purchase the least expensive parts I can over that period of time.  And then I do the project all at one time.  I have fund when I hurry a decision, and rush into a job, I tend to spend way more $$ than was necessary.

No matter what the upgrade is you will be happy.  That is why it is called an "upgrade"
