Clutch Question

 Installed a second clutch spring to deal with a little clutch slipping - worked great but in stop and go traffic (Dallas Traffic) its killer on the hand.
Installed a FJR 1300 master cyl. and that helped some but still hard on the hand some days. I drive 50 miles one way to work and some days it takes 2 hrs. to get there. Like I said lots of stop and go.  :mad:
Well I came across a new OEM yamaha fj1200 clutch spring on flea bay for 10 bucks and bought it. I also ordered 8 new fiber plates from yamaha. The plan was to install the new fiber plates (have did the clutch mods that lets you use 8 full sized fiber plates) and new spring, but just use the ONE new spring instead of the 2 used springs.
The Question is; with the clutch mods, new fiber plates, and "stock spring" -- will the clutch hold. The motor is stock except for pipe, pod filters and rejet. ----- I do ride the bike hard some days.
The other option was to install a spring conversion kit which I understand pulls a litter easier than the dual stock spring setup.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Yes, it should hold up fairly well.  Still may slip if the oil isn't all the way up to temp.  That was the time when I noticed my clutch slipping, it was in middle gears up near where the power comes on (3rd, 4th gear, around 6k rpm) and only when cold.  Once things warmed up, it was fine.  There's probably a bunch of different causes there, depending on which you want to think of. 

If you are "almost" having the amount of clutch grab and grip strength required, then there's some things that can be done.  You can modify the master to alter where the pivot is for the lever (offset pin and a bush will do the trick), and you can shim the diaphram a pinch.  Also, your overall stack height (total thickness of all fibers and steels) will change where in the spring's sweet spot you're sitting, so the new parts may prove quite useful for that.


After trying the double spring setup, a single spring, and the coil conversion kit, I'm using the coil setup, as it's more adjustable/tuneable for the feel I want.  The dual spring clamped down HARD on the pack, but was difficult to modulate cleanly at the lever (with a stock master).

 Yes, I've also noticed the issue with clutch modulation when using 2 stock springs, gets annoying after pulling and releasing the clutch 20 to 30 times in 5 min.
3rd gear roll on - when the rpm hit 6000 the clutch would start slipping, same with fourth gear. (stock clutch)
