Hi. I've changed the filter along with the o rings but I'm getting loads of oil pouring out from between the bolt and the housing

You have a leaking o ring (see #7)
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/yamaha/motorcycle/1990/fj1200a/oil-filter

Also it's very common to pinch the neutral switch wire between the oil filter housing and block, watch for that...
Finally, be sure you have the spring washer #9 for proper sealing of the filter.

Cheers

I just changed my oil yesterday.  First time since going to this:

I'll never go back to the stock FJ filter setup.  This spin on adapter from RPM is a lot better.

+1 for the spin-on oil filter adapter.  Great stuff!
The stock oil filter mess is a royal PITA.  I'd never go back.

WIX makes good spin-on filters.  They have anti-drainback flapper valves,
so the oil filter remains full when the engine is not running.

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

One other note on the stock filter. When I brought my FJ back to life after sitting for 16 or so years, I bought a new filter. The new O-ring was much thicker and I was having a hard time with the installation. Ended up reusing the old one and it was fine. This was for an aftermarket filter, Fram I think, and now made in china.
