Haven't tried to start it yet, or even turn it over. I'm thinking I'd like to try pumping oil into it thru one or the other of the oil cooler ports. I made up a couple of adapters to hook a hand oil pump up to it.  Anybody got any ideas about which port comes from the oil pump in the motor and which feeds up into the motor? And, is this worth the effort?   Pete

Pete, that's a waste of time. The oil pump has two stages. One for engine lubrication and the other is the oil cooler circuit. You'll just be trying to lube the cooler circuit.

If you are concerned about dry start, pull the spark plugs and valve cover. Pour oil over the cams and journals and lobes which will also lubricate the timing chain too. Fog some oil into each cyinder as well.

Hand screw the six valve cover bolts from the right to left (do not tighten with tools) Leave the furthest left two out. While cranking the engine, those two bolts are the last pressurized oil points. Once you have clear oil with no air bubbles pulsing there, the oil system is fully primed

Pete, you are going to gently turn it over by hand first...right?

I am doing the same with an 86 that sat for 15-17 years. I did similar to what Randy said except I used assembly lube for the top end. What I want to point out is that I pulled the oil cooler off (leaving the oil lines connected) and it was empty, but when I put an air line onto the intake oil line and shot some pressurized air in there and some oil looking oil came out the other line, so it must have been gunked up in there. I then filled it with marvel mystery oil and let it sit upside for for a few days, drained it and blew it out again. Glad I did that, but I'm a newbie to FJ's so take what I say with a grain of salt.

A blocked oil cooler is not the end of the world, again, it's a separate circuit (separate pump) from the engine oiling circuit.
Worry about the oil screen on the pump pickup.

I took off the oil pan on mine to check all that, thankfully it was ok. But I had a really tough time getting the gasket off the pan and engine, tried everything. In the end I purchased a tungsten tipped scraper, that was the only thing that could take the gasket off but I took off some of the aluminum with it so I had to block sand both the pan and engine afterwards to level it all out.

Does anyone know the torque for the bolts that hold the oil pan on?

This is great info. I was planning the assembly lube all over the top end. Already fogged the cylinders. One of your posts Pat talked about hand cranking back and forth a bit to save the rings. Fingers crossed.
