Ok, ,first off,..to all of you who said "clean your carbs". You were right! I took my bank of carbs to a small shop that had an ultrasonic cleaner with a special non-rubber-harming solution.  And when I picked them up he said there was still quite a pile of crap that came out. Mind you it also cleans the outside so I`m not sure how much was inside. Even the diaphragm rubbers were soft and supple again. I personally have never seen a set of carbs that was not clean even though all the jets and passageways could be blown through. I`ll believe it now.

Now,..............I`ll have to admit I was stumped by the symptoms because they were changing and didn`t make sense. But it turns out that`s because I had THREE problems all at once! The carbs were dirty somewhere, I had a bad crimp on one of the terminals in the fuel pump relay connector which caused the wire to fall out, and it turns out the ignitor box wasn`t turning the fuel pump on after the engine was running! It turns on the pump for the five seconds after the key is turned on but nothing when the engine is running.

I have a few questions now

1. I got a replacement TCI from the US. It`s for an `89. It`s marked TID14-90. Mine is a -65. I was under the impression `88-`90 were all the same? The replacement one didn`t turn on the fuel pump when the key is turned on or when the engine is running.

2.I`m under the impression the box controls the five second run when the key is turned on and also controls the relay when the engine is running. If not, what controls the relay?

3. Up at the front left hand side of the frame there`s a relay assembly. What the heck is it for?

thanks,
Ray

This mob may be able to help you with your TID....

They list these as having been repaired by them......

FJ1200 (TID14-50, TID14-51, TID14-65, TID14-67, TID 14-90)

Maybe a quick email is all you need to find the answers to 1 and 2 above.

I seem to recall there being a separate box for the fuel pump relay, but I don't have the manual here at work, so I can't double check.

But.... going to Yamaha's online parts catalog, it show that #40 on Electrical 2 is the fuel pump control box......

Actually, I had already purchased a new one thinking I had a relay problem. I now have two on the bench! But the weird thing is a couple of sites have the relay for over $100US while I walked in to my local Yamaha dealer here in Canada and was quoted I think it was $65 CAN! Maybe it pays to shop around!.
