Yeah, I was being unreasonable with the exhaust.  Probably because I'd never driven that far from home, car or bike.  It did calm my nerves that I was able to provide a fix, even if it was mostly placebo.  I didn't worry about it anymore and could have fun again.  The vibe I got from the people I talked to was that being closed Friday was a pretty normal thing.  Maybe everyone starts the weekend early when they can or if they want to.

Maybe for the next time: The HVAC people (and their suppliers) will have METAL duct tape, not fabric, which will be heavy aluminum in various thicknesses.  Wrap the cracked pipe with the wide tape in several layers, and add two screw-band hose clamps, one on each side of the break.  The metal tape (in multiple layers) can even be strong enough to reduce or stop further cracking of the metal pipe.  Cinch the clamps tight, and don't worry about the wrinkles. 
Amazon (among others) will have metal duct tape.

You had me at "I Quit My Job..."     Great trip report.  These are the best journeys.  No final destination. No time requirements.  Enjoy them while you can.

I think the left bulb in your rear light is turned the wrong way and you have a constant brake light on.
