Replacement Fuel Pump for '89 FJ12

Hi All, new mate has an '89 FJ12 and its Fuel pump has failed, looking for a replacement, RPM sell an original but it's over $200, i've seen the
Quantum pump on ebay, it gets good reviews and is only $70, i'm ignoring the $20 ebay specials, so has anyone any experience of the Quantum one or is it best for my pal to raid his piggy bank for the OEM Yamaha one at RPM?

If the Flea Bay Quantum pump is from China, I would take a hard pass..... ask me how I know this :dash1:

For $200 you will have a oem pump that will last another 35 years.

We put a Holley on both the FJ and my son's Magna V30.  Very happy with them and they are made in the US.

I'm putting a Holley Mighty-Mite fuel pump in place of the stock one.  We did this on my son's V30 Magna as well.  Here he is fabricating a couple of bushings for me to use as standoffs.


Pump, plate, bushings, and bolts.


Here is the Holley bolted into the stock fuel pump location.  Spacing between the Yamaha threaded holes is about 40mm.  Spacing for the Holley pump is 2.5".  Those 3 holes form two lines on a right angle.


The only almost major task for tomorrow is to attach the fittings to the pump, and attach the lines to the fittings.  Then try it out of course.

I put fittings on my pump and actually hooked it all up. It works.


Here is the bike after a brief couple of laps around the hangars.


At low revs it runs horribly and sounds bad at idle. I can feel one cylinder is not firing and it cuts back in around 2500 RPM.  After 2500 it runs great and I had forgotten how much punch this bike has!  

Would be glad to hear some thoughts on the poor low speed performance. My initial thought is carb synch.  The spark plugs are the old ones as well. I set the idle air jets as per Pat's post earlier in my thread.  

Additionally I put a manual shutoff in line that I can get to.  Handy for maintenance.

I put a petcock as a disconnect for my new fuel lines & pump.  The brass fittings really bite into the fuel line and are hard to remove.


Rode it about 40 miles.  Smooth, powerful off the line, idles great. Runs like an FJ.

I could be wrong - but I'd bet you a cup of tea that it is a chinese pump repackaged for them, and re-priced from $13 to $70.  If I really wanted an OEM form pump I'd buy the $200 one from RPM.

One last reply - you can also buy a set of pump points and replace them.  $41 at RPM.  But then you still have an old technology pump with points to regulate pressure.  The Holley is a solid state pump.

I think several on the forum have been happy with replacement points.  I believe that is the weak link in the pump.

Hey Bob, like Bryan said, I'm not sure they are made in Ventura, Calif. Perhaps they are?
I don't know enough about the company.

The good news is the Quantum folks should be much easier to deal with if you ever have a warranty issue than those Singapore merchants with their "lifetime warranty".

A broken fuel pump is not the end of the world if you carry one of these in your fairing cubby:


Every fuel pump FJ should keep one of these handy....it will get you home.
