i took my airfilter out of my fj last night to see how bad it was and found the filter laying at the bottom of the housing and also found that its a K&N. i see the two little removable tabs that slide into the housing to hold the filter up. it seems that the K&N is smaller than the factory filter and wont reach the tabs. so now i cant get the filter to stay up in the correct position and close the lid. it just falls down. am i missing something   :wacko1:  :flag_of_truce:

Yes,
The K&N is held in with a large U-shaped rod instead of the stock tabs.

UH OH i dont see any u shaped bracket. does anyone have any suggestions    :dash2:     :ireful:

Swap to a UNI replacement filter.  It can use the stock tabs.  K&N sucks anyway.

I have one of those, unused (I went with the dual pods), as well as a well used K&N laying around somewhere.

I should find them and post them up here, I guess.    :morning2:

My 89 had two plastic wedge-thingies loose in the airbox under a stock filter. One was broken and poorly glued back together, but all they do is hold the filter up so it can catch the groove in the cover right? My K&N fit up ok though it took a couple of tries. Why does K&N suck?

K&Ns suck because they do a VERY POOR job of filtering..... they let the fine, silty stuff through and it can and will screw up your cylinders and rings. If you live in the PNW or any other wet, humid environment, they're OK, but in the desert they are worse than useless.... I discovered this fact with my '85 XR600, when I took it apart the cyl had a hugely excessive amount of taper and general wear. Obvious signs of the dust getting into it.  :dash1:

well i temporarily got it rigged up in the air box and took it down the road and wow what a difference. i lost some performance because of air flow restricted now. i guess i just have to get use to it.. thanks everyone for the help
