Does the front cam chain guide go in before the exhaust cam is installed. Manual's a little hazy on this.

Well, Pete - if you just read a bit further in the manual, it's explained pretty clearly.
Cams are in, timings good, no ugly binding or noises.  I'm a happy boy.

Sounds like I was having the same problem that you had Fred - smoked at idle and never cleared up. The bike sat in a storage locker for 4 or 5 years and things dry out. Compression was right on 150 on all cylinders so, being the ace mechanic that I'm not, I figure the valve stem seals needed to be replaced. Cross-hatch honed the cylinders while it was apart. If this doesn't cure it, I'll probably have to re-ring it.
  So far, into it for a gasket set - $100 - and $200 to Woody's (place has to be seen to be believed) for the head work. If it does have to come apart again, I'm only out a few gaskets and time spent and there's lots of that around at the moment.
  All my sockets are lucky.
