In need of a worthwhile BS carb cleaning instructional

Hey All,

I'm new to the Mikuni BS carb bank. I've purchased the awesome o-ring and ss screw kits from RPM already, and have the carb bank on the shop bench.
I'm ready to get at it, but would like some instruction in way of a video or literature.

Please!!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ What Frank wrote.  Paying Robert to rebuild your carbs will be some of the best money you ever spent on your FJ.  Just a for instance, suppose some ham handed type "rebuilt" your carbs before and used incorrect parts.  Would you know the difference?  Robert does and he has in the past.  Search previous posts about rebuilding the FJ carbs and you will see the same advice over and over for good reason.

I disagree, what did we do before RPM?  We learned by making mistakes, but we learned.
If you have no desire to learn, or don't have time, or distrust yourself, fine, go ahead and send them to Robert.He will do a great job. Absolutely.

However, if you want to learn....do it yourself.  UTube has some great carb tutorials.
Having the RPM ss screw and o ring kit is 1/2 the battle.
We will help you. I know this is true because the guys on this forum, like David R, helped me.

I'm all for learning, but a completely unknown set of carbs on a bike this old is a frustrating starting point...  what if a jet has been drilled, or the wrong needle/seat installed, or the choke plungers are worn, or ...?  My impulsive response was based on seeing the frustration people run into with unknown carbs... but I stick to it!  RPM will get you out of the gate with known carb config that's clean and all circuits working correctly...

The other path will start with teardown, clean, reassemble and then start to figure out what's wrong.  We've all seen this spiral can easily lead to hours of re-work, testing, second guessing, chasing symptoms, etc.  Can be pretty discouraging and, in the end, all you'll learn is cleaning and rebuilding carbs is a tricky thing benefitting enormously from knowledge gained through experience...  and you'll likely send to RPM along the way. 

Obviously my opinion here...

 :good2: Good points Frank, what we have learned in dealing with unknown carbs is to start fresh with a known quantity,  new pilot, main and air bleed jets. The cost is minimal. RPM is a great source for these parts.

For those who have no desire to learn, by all means, send them to RPM, but if Benny wants to learn, let's help him out. For example, maybe the PO installed a Dyno Jet kit? Who knows? We can tell.
