Long time Honda owner... lots of 60's-80's bikes over the years. This '85 FJ1100 is my first Yamaha. Picked it up last week for $350. It has some cosmetic damage (plastic rash) and a smashed pulsar/pickup plate and shifter linkage from being dumped it in a left turn. I've already repaired the broken mechanical parts... got it to fire briefly but the battery seems weak and I think the carbs are gummy. Throttle is a little sticky. Needs new tires and fork seals. Spark leads need replaced... they zap me when I touch them. Overall seems to have weak spark, I attribute to the weak battery (only 10V when cranking), old spark wires, and I need to check grounds on everything. A few melty/frayed wires here and there but nothing to do with the ignition. Despite the general lack of maintenance, it seems solid and should make a good winter project.

I think this wins the medal for dirtiest air filter I've ever seen.

Welcome Warren, as you are discovering the FJ is easy to work on. Many here will be happy to offer support and info as needed. The collective here has contributed much knowledge and you can find it in the files section and in the many years of posts. I recommend the Google search method over the internal search function. In a Google search I start each search with "fjowners.com search subject". The results are more human friendly.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

We're not a club. Clubs have rules. Pay dues. Wear hats and shit.

I thought I knew Illinois pretty well... I must admit I've never heard of Tiskilwa. You are about halfway between where I live now in Chicago and my hometown of Quincy.
