Hi Folks,
My son is showing interest in getting a used FJR. I know there is lots of talk about using parts off them for our FJ's. I have an FJR clutch master on my '89. I also know that some members have moved to the FJR. I am looking for your experiences with the older models. He has found a 2003 for sale with 23,600 miles on it at $3600. What should he be looking out for in the used market.

Where is your son located?  The early FJRs had a few glitches, most notably the excess heat from the engine.  There are fixes for that problem, but not complete cures.  It may be okay in Maine/Mass, but not in Phoenix.  Anything 2008 and newer should fine.  Avoid "tunnel vision" on any one bike; there are good deals out there.  Happy hunting.

My brother bought an fjr. Was and was told the same thing 2008 or newer.  He now owns a super Sonic sofa. And loves it. I felt I was too far removed from the road. Can't feel anything. It's fast and handles fine. I just need some feedback.

Yep, I'm with Dan, FJR's are nice bikes for sure.....but then again, the world is full of nice bikes.

I've told myself, ok damnit, this is it...I'm tired of lubing this stupid chain. I'm going to get a FJR when this can of chain lube is empty.....but I always seem to have a new can of chain lube, along with a back up can.

This has been going on for years now....

Even still, a low mileage 2018 six speed FJR keep's calling me....

Bought the wifey a '04 FJR way back when.  Great bike but no "soul".  It was a rocket, did everything you could reasonably ask of it and at the end of the day it was just "oh well".  She loved it but it was too heavy for her, switched to a Kawi 650 and she immediately picked up 10 mph.  I would seriously consider one if long distance touring was my thing, otherwise I like having a bike that challenges me to ride it properly without going beserk.

Thanks for the responses. He went for it. He and his wife are just getting into short distance day trips so I'm hoping he's happy with it. He has asked about me taking him down to ride the dragon. I told him he'd like the Cherohala a great deal more. You might just see us a rally sometime.

Wish I saw this earlier.  There are loads of Gen II and newer FJRs out there for similar asking prices as that Gen I.  They're practically giving them away. I know, I couldn't find anyone to bite on my '06 for $2K.
