Highway1 honeymoon

Hey fellas! It's been awhile since I've visited the sight. I ended up selling my bike (hmmm wow it's been 6 years!) and have lost touch with my inner FJ Chi. However, I do stumble in here once a year in the springtime when everyone ELSE is rolling their bikes out of the garage, shining them up, adjusting the chain and then just wait for the unmistakable sweet sweet sound of an in-line 4 cyl engine racing through its rpm range wot!!.... ahhh... So anyway. Sold the bike, moved 6hrs away, got a new job, met a totally hot babe and asked her to marry me (even tho she's not into to fj's)ha So that brings us up to current day. We are getting married Aug 3 and we were talking about honeymoon destinations. I suggested riding highway 1 up the Cali coast...... and she approved!!! So my question is, having never been to the coast, is there a "best section to ride" or is it all good? I'll have to try to rent a motorcycle (Preferably an fj) lol. Just looking for a little insight from others and their experiences on a secret scenic route or a nice bed and breakfast or a winery... you get the picture. Well I'm gonna surf over the the for sale section and day dream about my next project fj! Ha Thanks for any suggestions or recommendations guys.  ya

The North Coast, (above SF) is also awesome and picturesque.  Many people enjoy staying at Sea Ranch or Gualala.

Paso Robles has some great wineries.  There is a road between the 5 and 101 freeways that has been a favorite of mine since I discovered it in the early 80s.  It runs from a little town called Coalinga over to the 101.  Motor Trend magazine recently had an article on the fastest cars in America and had the CHP block off a section of this road to do their tests. Then from there you need to find your way over to PCH and Big Sur.  I too have sold my FJ.  But I still like to day dream!

I'd start north of SF in Bodega Bay...  spend a night or two there, then ride up to Mendocino and spend a couple nights there.  In Bodega Bay area, specifically in Jenner a few miles north along 1, try to stay and dine at River's End.  Very unique experience in a beautiful setting. 

Mendocino is unbelievable in its beauty and full of art shops and great eateries...  We stayed in several B&Bs there over the years and they were all great.  Riding north further is also spectacular leading your into the redwoods and some unique attractions like ride-through trees and such.

The suggested route south of SF is also very nice, but I think much more crowded.  Nepenthe is a favorite of ours as well, as is the lesser known but even more beautiful setting at Ragged Point.  It's also cheaper and has lodging.  I'd discourage going up 1 through San Francisco, but the Golden Gate almost makes it worthwhile.  The road becomes a major city street with hills, stoplights, shitty roads, etc... 

You'll have a great time, and I'm sure the "hot babe" will enjoy as well.

The Cali-guys can steer you in the right direction as far as the Coast-Route, and which section is best. I'm told Pfeiffer Beach State Park area is a "Must-See"
Are you still in NM?  I was just down that way on my Super Tenere on my way to Arizona...............

I've stayed here a couple times. Nice quiet place with some great views & accommodations. If you have the time, touring Fort Ross nearby is interesting.

Big thanks to everyone! All suggestions were considered aaaaaand none were taken..... (see Pats link)    haha ... We have successfully planned our route from LA to SF it just seems that there is never enough time. We decided to drive from LA to Monterey where we will stay a couple days and ride from Monterey to SF. As excited as I am to 2 wheel it for a stretch, unfortunately it will have to be on a Harley...(don't shame me, a Harley was the only thing i could rent out of Monterey) should be interesting... We are excited to spend our time on the coast hopefully the weather will be nice.. I almost had her talked into riding a motorcycle with a side car haha no cigar... Thanks again for the help it was an important part of our decision making! Alan, the 2012 colo rally was a blast and it was a pleasure to meet everyone there, and one day I will make another rally.  When I win the Lottery ill make it to all them!!
