Impressive that of all the late seventies and early eighties engines that they could use, they choose the FJ.  Impressive.  I suppose it's for the same reason that Legends cars are powered by the same architecture.

It's really no wonder why the big lump of the FJ engine is so durable. Back in '82 Yamaha originally designed the FJ1100 to compete in endurance racing, primarily 8 hour Suzuka. Endurance racing was the premiere event for manufacturers and bragging rights along with being a great test bed for their product development.
The Hondas were kicking ass and Yamaha needed an update to their XJ engine.

Alas....by the time the FJ was in early production a rule change was introduced to limit engine size to 750cc.
