This thread really has got me thinking about my bike.  I have imagined that I heard the engine turning over slowly when my helmet is on but dismissed it due to poor hearing.  Now I'm thinking it's really happening.

Would a '90 model already have the 4 pole starter?  I know I need a new battery and the lithium batteries that Robert showed me are on the list.

My understanding is that all FJ's came with the 2 pole starter.
It was later when the XJR's were in production that Yamaha introduced the 4 pole motor.

Randy will chime in with the year the 4 pole starters came out....
I'm guessing 1999 when the XJR1300's came out?

No, Yamaha changed in the late 80's early 90's, I do not know exactly what year. Next time I have the tank of the 89 & 91 I can see which ones they have. I do know my 93 does have a four pole.

Randy, can you determine which starter I have from this pic?

Yes, that is a two pole/brush starter. If the starter has the exposed phillips head screws that is the main indication of a two brush.

All of the four brush starters have a smooth external body.
