Hello all hope you are doing well.
I am not though because someone backed into my love today and broke her quite a bit. I need to know what this piece atop the fork is and if I can just replace that or if its more integral than it looks. Image attached.

It is just a dust cover. Weird failure, but I have seen even more wired failures. A little cover to keep the crap out and you can ride. Tape, gum, left over cat skin....
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

That is actually the top of the screw-in fork cap. That will result in the fork leaking oil up there since the orings is loose within the fork tube.

When the handle bar clip was pushed up, it must have snapped that off.

You need to replace that top fork tube nut.

Thank you as always Randy.
Also who has leftover cat skin? I use the whole thing.

Sorry, that is not something I offer new or is available anymore from Yamaha. You need for cap number 36Y-2319U-00-00

There are couple listed on eBay at the moment but they are pretty darn expensive. If anyone has any old forks they might have one lying around.

Here is a set of forks with free shipping for the same price as the cap: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-Yamaha-FJ1200-86-Left-Right-Front-Fork/332690257062?hash=item4d75e274a6:g:H9UAAOSwWfFXkTI0

I will have Robert look tomorrow if we have anything, but I do not recall ever seeing any of those lying around.

That set apparently had bad seals but I found another one just a tad pricier that was clean. Well you're going to be getting another order from me pretty soon haha
