1991 FJ1200 power loss

So, this is frustrating - I was riding down the highway and the bike just loses power and dies. All the electrical working fine but won't start. Sits for 20 min and fires back up. Rides fine for two days. Going on a very short ride through town and the same thing, twist throttle and nothing happens....bike dies. Let sit for 20 and it fires up and appears fine again...

Anyone else have this happen? CDI problem? Cylinder? Coils? Anyone have electrical specs so I can test? Ugh.

Next time it happens try opening the fuel cap and starting it back up. For some reason I thought the Flappendectamy was not such a problem on the fuel pump bikes but it sounds like what you are describing. If opening the cap fixes it look at this PDF file on this thread http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=2024.0 Take the white and orange piece out and throw it away. (FWIW you could do this any way with no ill effects)

Weird - Thanks Robert, I'll give it a shot. I bought my fiance a '92 FJ and both our bikes 'whistle' from the gas cap - just assumed that was normal

Since you have a fuel pump you should also check the fuel filter. If it is clogged it will allow fuel but not at full flow, so It will also act like a vacuum locked tank.
The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Does it shut off instantly like the ignition is shutting down? 
Or does it act like it's not running on all the cylinders before it dies?

The former is ignition or other electrical.  The latter is fuel flow, possibly improper fuel tank venting or clogged filter as mentioned.

Speaking of clogged fuel filters.  Has anyone ever had one?  I changed the filter on my FZ1 at around 60,000 miles and got ZERO debris out of it.  In fact, I left the new one installed and put the old back in the box to keep.

My guess is that your fuel pump is intermittently cutting out. Happened to me.
Try bypassing the fuel pump (line tie) see if that helps.
I had that exact same problem with Jason's '93 after I put a "lifetime warranty" FleaBay Chinese fuel pump in his bike. Work...then no work, then work, then no work..

Get a brass male/male connector and take the fuel lines off the fuel pump and plug them together.

Every Fuel pump FJ'er should carry this male/male connector in the cubby of his bike.
It will get you home.

This is true Pat and it has worked for many an FJ'er but if the plan is to finish the trip, not just limp home, a spare cheap pump also fits in the tail next to the tool kit.
I have a connector that lives on the bike and a spare pump in my tool box that I take on trips (along with the spare coil/leads and spare ignition unit) so I am covered for both limping and running.

Thanks everyone, going to get it into the shop today and have a look at it. Seems to be more of a fuel flow thing for sure - all the electrical seems fine

Not on a bike and rarely on cars, and even then usually only as a direct result of contaminated fuel of disintergrating fuel tank.

This is surprising considering how fine the filter is, the volume of fuel that passes through one over a couple of hundred thousands km's and the fact that FJ's have no fine tank filter. My FJ filter has been in there for a 170k.

UPDATE: It was definitely the fuel pump - got an aftermarket one for a V-Star yesterday and made it work fine

Took it out today, and it's running great, but now somehow my throttle tube is sticking  :dash2:

Took a look and it's slightly cracked off towards the weight, and it was a bad glue job on the grip to begin with, so... I  could probably clean this one up but would rather just replace it.  Any suggestions on where to order new ones/grips?

Pats right, RPM, but i also ordered new grips off of Revzilla about a year back, and love them. They are red and black, so a little more flashy than RPMs, if youre into that. That are also holding up extremely well, even through Phoenix summers.

To be fair though, i only went to Revzilla because RPM was out of stock, and i didn't want foam grips
