Issues with K&N oil filter

Hello All! I am new to the site and new to the FJ series. I currently have a 1990 FJ1200 that I recently bought.


I had to fix the gasket on the clutch due to a leak so I drained the oil and changed the oem oil filter with a K&N (which came with 3 o-rings, the smallest one fit inside the housing for the bolt, and the next size up fit inside the filter housing. There was a 3rd but it was too large to fit anywhere) and filled everything up. On the ride I noticed there was oil dripping out from the oil filter when the bike was running. So I took it apart, made sure the gaskets were seatdd in the filter and put it back on, however this time it started pouring out like there was no seal almost.
Can anyone help me with pictures how to do this filter step by step? I am in dire need of help.

The stock oil filter assembly requires 2 o-rings.  The large one goes on the filter base and the small one goes on the bolt.  Typical issues with the stock filter are a pinched large o-ring (it wants to fall out easily).  Also make sure you have the thin washer that goes between the spring and the filter.  This is easy to lose and throw out with the old filter.... (been there, done that).  The general PIA that the oil filter is has caused many of us to upgrade to the RPM spin on filter.

I forgot about the teensy weensy gasket that goes on the filter drain screw.  Never bothered with it and I don't remember if the filters came with that anyways....

That little gasket on the filter housing drain screw is just a copper washer. As with the washer on the drain bolt, it is good to put new one on if you removed it (I don't, nor it is needed to - a bit more messy).

You have a leak because of bad O-ring, dirt on the seat of the O-ring or you pinched the wires that come from the oil-level sender unit. Be careful about those wires. If it is nothing obvious like that - buy OEM O-ring and have a peace of mind. O-rings that are supplied with filters are a compromise for multiple models like the filter itself (hence probably the third O-ring you've got).

As Balky said something isn't jiving. The way you have it described you have the o-rings in the proper spots. Either replace the o-rings or upgrade to the RPM Spin On Oil Filter Adapter and Oil Filter O-ring It will be many many years before you have to worry about replacing the o-ring again.

Where is it leaking?  From the large o-ring around the filter housing or around the o-ring on the bolt that holds the housing to the engine?  I'm assuming it's the large o-ring around the housing since it can shift while installing.  If you have pinched that in some way it probably can't be re-used.  I finally replaced my stock system with the RPM adapter last year but the quick fix for you would be to make your stock set-up work right.  Make sure you don't over tighten the bolt holding it to the housing.  That could cause damage to the threads in the engine and may deform the gasket and cause it to leak.

Ok thank you everyone, I needed a new washer and large O-ring. Turns out the biggest o-ring with the kit is the one needed, it was just a bitch to get in. No more leak from the filter anymore!
Next thing I need to do is get a need gasket for the valve heads.

The glass is not half full, it was engineered with a 2X safety factor.

Noo that's for the head valve right? I need to do that next though so thank you haha

Those are grommets that seal where the valve cover bolts thru the valve cover.
