Hello all. I am the latest owner of an FJ. I just brought home a 1992 FJ1200. I have a lot of work ahead of me this winter but it will be tons of fun. I'm already digging through the wealth of info on here. I got the bike for free from a friend. It hasn't run since 2013. It has 26,000 miles on the clock. It should clean up real nice. The last time it was running he said he heard some kind of clunking and parked it for the winter. The carbs gummed up and he never messed with it again. It has a Corbin seat I'm super excited about! I can't wait to Helvetia this thing running. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start with the clunking? It was at idle he said.

Thanks in advance
Rob

Welcome Rob, clean out the carbs, clean out the gas tank, put in a fresh fuel filter, fresh oil and filter and a fresh battery....then start her up and go from there.
No telling what the previous owner heard. The clunking could be the starter chain rattling from a low idle or a bad rod bearing and everything/anything in between.

26,000 miles is low, so I would be surprised if it was something serious, but I've been surprised before.

Cheers.  Pat

Thanks for the info. I really doubt it's anything to serious as well. I think the carbs were gummed up and causing a lot of his issues. He said it was only running on maybe two cylinders when he heard the noise. Said it was not taking any throttle. I've had lots of cool bikes 94 Magna, 85 Suzuki Madura 1200, 85 Vmax, on and on. But there's something about this FJ that really has me intrigued. I can't wait to get it going! It's one of those bikes I could see myself putting tons of miles on.

Check the valves, too.

Yes, yes, yes!
Assume the PO did nothing.

Great point Balky :good2:

I plan to pretty much check EVERYTHING. I've got all winter so no need to rush through it.  I'm so picky it might look showroom new by the time I get done.
