No crank - not a kill switch problem - SOLVED

This post is meant to be just a heads up for one of possible reasons why you have no crank when you push the start button (besides the all the other that are well documented).
I pushed the start button and nothing happened. Oil light would come on like it is supposed to, but no cranking sound. Nothing. I thought it is probably the kill switch, switched it to "off" and "run" a couple of times and the bike started. I thought i solved the problem until I turned off the bike and the same thing happened again. Then I heard a weird sound coming from under the seat. Removed the seat, the side panels, disconnected and reconnected all known connectors - still nothing. Battery showing amazing 17.5V. Hmmmmm.
Then I accidentally noticed a wire slapping around and before you know it I found the culprit. Put it back where it should be and know the bike cranks like crazy, better than any time before. Who knows how long I had this problem.  :greeting:

Balky,

So, what was the intended purpose of the loose wire?  How did you re-connect it?
Cheers,

P.S. Life is too short, and health is too valuable, to ride on cheap parade-duty tires.

If I understood your question correctly, that wire goes from battery + to the starter solenoid where it is connected in a cable lug with another cable that goes in some connector. You can see a leftover of a cable lug that broke still connected with a screw to the solenoid. Luckily I was able to purchase another one and provisionally connected it until I got home to fix it properly.

I had same problem 2 weeks ago, just on the other end of wiring harness.
Driving on highway, everything was ok, but on the exit engine suddenly died like with kill switch.
No lights at all as with no battery in the bike.
Pushed bike from the road, checked main fuse - ok, fuses under cowling - ok.
Was getting dark, so had to push bike to my friends place to keep it safe.
Next day I was checking fuses many times, but no success.
So if positive side was ok, I found that main grounding / thick wire from battery negative to engine was broken.
Copper end on the engine side was broken, probably due to vibrations.
So removed insulation, grounded battery using sprocket cover bolt and drove back home.
But this was first time in 12 years I own my FJ I ended on the road with bike not running.
Also I mentioned that generator wiring has partly melted conector.
Adding to my to do list for this winter :mail1:

That was exactly my flow of mind also. Except in my case everything checked OK. I almost gave up, lookin at the bike in disbelief because, like you said, FJ is usually not a bike that leaves you stranded, when I noticed something looked a bit out of the ordinary with that wire hanging around.
Mechanics say that usually electrical problems on vehicles start after their 10th birthday. So, this is nothing unusual.
