89 Front Wheel Spacers & Another Bent Rim Question

Putting an eBay 1989 front end on my 1986 to get rid of anti-dive and get a 17" front wheel.

I'm doing a test fit and notice there is a large gap on the axle and wondering if I am missing any spacers?

Right now all I have is the speedometer spacer thing on the front left side of the bike between the wheel and forks and one tapered spaced on the front right side of the bike between wheel and forks. I have the wheel pushed to the left side of the bike and you can see there is about a half inch gap. I cant imagine I am supposed to tighten the axle this much to close the gap, so am I missing a spacer? Also on the front left side where the axle threads into the forks do I just put a pin through the axle, is there no other nut required? Maybe I was given the wrong length axle?

One more question, on my ebay wheel there is s light bend on the edge. I'm not bothered by it but is this slight bend an issue? I imagine it's from somebody prying on it during a tire change. Here is video of the bent rim. I just want to make sure it's not a safety concern. https://youtube.com/shorts/qfCU9MAUdoY?si=4nxC5sqh_XEFSgD1

This front bent rim is a separate question from the post I made a few days ago about the bent rear rim with the big gash in it. I am returning that rim.

As always the groups thoughts are appreciated.

Ok I think I know the issue the wheel is an FZR wheel so the hub is shorter

I think this wheel is an FZR wheel and not an FJ1200 wheel. It has "J 17XMT3.00" printed on it. Looking at the hub I think it's an FZR.

I think that is an FZR600 front rim.  Sure to need some work to get it centered.  Don't just add to the right side spacer - make sure the brake disks are centered in the calipers and add spacers to both sides if needed.

Millietant

Definitely NOT a FZR 1000 wheel - that would be a J17xMT3.50 wheel.

As has been said, more likely a FZR 600 wheel.

It looks you've got a case for returning everything and getting your money back if you'd been sold it all as a 89 FJ 1200 front end.

'89 FJ 1200 3CV - owned from new.
'89 FJ 1200 3CV - no engine, tank, seat....parts bike for the future.
'88 FJ 1200 3CV - complete runner 2024 resto project
'88 FJ 1200 3CV - became a race bike, no longer with us.
'86 FJ 1200 1TX - sold to my boss to finance the '89 3CV I still own.

so I purchased forks from an 89 and it came with an 89 wheel but I thought going with red wheels would be nice on my red and white 86 so I found two red wheels on ebay. The rear wheel is a proper FJ wheel but got damaged. The front wheel is what turned out to be an FZR wheel, but wheels are being returned and now I think I may use VHT caliper paint to paint the wheels the color I want.

Only question remaining on the 89 front end now is when the axle threads into the bottom fork tube on the front left side do I just slide a pin through the hold in the axle? Is there no other nut or washer that goes on there? Maybe a washer between the pin and fork tube?

Pat Conlon

That's normal. No worries, it will never get loose. The pinch bolt on the other (right) side keeps the axle tight.
Besides, consider the rotation direction of the wheel. Any rotational forces transferred to to the axle would cause it to tighten up, never loosen up.

Thanks Pat, I do see the axle has a hole in it for a pin but I would really need to torque it down to maybe just have enough room for the pin. Is a pin not needed?

Pat Conlon

No the pin is not needed....just the pinch bolt.

Rolling forward that axle will never unwind....the pinch bolt keeps it from the possibility of getting too tight.
