So... I seem to have taken to this making my personal baby aspect with my FJ. The love affair started well, but VERY quickly, I had the 2nd gear issue. I needed a tire, the rear shock linkage was sloppy and I figured out the really pretty GSXR front end with big brakes, was about 3" shorter than stock. You really see it when it is on the centre stand, and I suffered it when I was scraping the centre stand all over the place.

As noted earlier, I got a 90 parts bike, and soon I will have the 90 forks, engine and complete rear end, with a nice new Metzler on it. The before picture is the bodywork I have offered for sale.

One question, the pickup coil is different from the 84 and the 90. I just swapped them over, and I think that will be done.  I'm using the 84 carbs because I have all the 84 bodywork, and don't want to run the fuel pump. Is there anything else I need to be aware of?

Keep in mind that the ignition boxes are different. The '84-87 FJ's used an analog TCI (transistor controlled ignition) In '89 and later FJ's used a DCI system (digital controlled ignition)

So when you say "you just swapped them over..." You mean that that you put the '84 TCI dual pick up (and rotor) in the '90 motor to run with your '84 TCI ignition box you should be fine. (Wired correctly)

....or if you swapped ignition boxes and used the '90 DCI ignition box with the '90 DCI single pick up (and rotor)  you should be fine. (Wired correctly)

You can not run the '84 dual TCI pick ups with the '90 DCI box or the '90 DCI single pick up with the '84 TCI box.

Thanks Pat! I put the dual pick up unit from the 84 on the new motor. I figured that was by far the easiest. i got the motor in the framp, and anticipate getting it all bolted back in tomorrow. the rear end is all in and bolted up, and I had to change the triple clamp, as that was different too. the stops were a pail with a rally small range of movement, and I repacked all the bearings when I was in there. I bought a set of blue dot calipers, and they are on the way. I noticed that it has a smaller sprocket on the back, so I guess I need to do a count. I found a set of unipod filters in the box of goodies too, so I think I will lose the airbox tomorrow. I got a good match for the silver of the frame, and have that all cleaned up and resprayed. Replacing all the bulbs in the instrument panel, an found the wierd clunking sound I had over bumps. something is lose inside the mirror!
